How to Get a NIE Number in Spain as a Middle Eastern National

The NIE is required for almost every legal and financial transaction in Spain. Here's how to get one.

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is Spain's foreigner identification number and is required for virtually every significant legal, financial, or administrative transaction in Spain: buying property, incorporating a company, opening a bank account, signing a lease, registering with the tax authority, and more. For Middle Eastern clients, obtaining a NIE is almost always the first step in any legal process in Spain.

What Is the NIE?

The NIE is a unique identification number assigned to non-Spanish nationals by Spain's National Police. It begins with X, Y, or Z, followed by 7 digits and a letter. It is not a residency document — you can hold a NIE as a non-resident — but it is required for most administrative processes.

How to Apply from Outside Spain

Non-residents can apply for a NIE at the Spanish Consulate in their country of residence. Required documents: completed NIE application form (EX-15), valid passport, documentation justifying the reason for needing the NIE (e.g. property purchase contract, company incorporation documents, bank account opening). Our team prepares and submits NIE applications through Spanish consulates in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Tehran, Istanbul, Riyadh, and Cairo.

How to Apply in Spain

If you are already in Spain on a short-stay visa, you can apply for a NIE at the local Oficina de Extranjería or at a designated National Police station. Appointments must be booked online and can be difficult to obtain. We manage the appointment booking process and accompany clients to their appointments when required.

Processing Time

NIE applications submitted through Spanish consulates typically take 2–6 weeks. Applications submitted in Spain can be processed on the same day (at police stations) or within 2–4 weeks (at immigration offices), depending on the location and current backlogs.

NIE vs. TIE

The NIE is just a number. The TIE (Tarjeta de Identificación de Extranjero) is the physical residence card issued to non-EU nationals who hold a Spanish residency permit. Once you obtain residency, you will apply for a TIE that contains your NIE. We manage both the NIE and TIE process for all our clients.
