How to Register as Self-Employed (Autónomo) in Spain as a Foreigner

A practical guide to the alta de autónomo process in Spain for Middle Eastern nationals and residents.

The autónomo regime — Spain's self-employed status — is the route for individuals who want to work independently in Spain, issue invoices to clients, and operate legally without forming a company. For Middle Eastern professionals relocating to Spain, registering as autónomo is often the fastest way to start working legally, particularly for consultants, designers, engineers, and freelancers.

What Is an Autónomo?

An autónomo is a self-employed individual registered with Spain's Social Security system and the Tax Agency (AEAT). As an autónomo, you pay monthly Social Security contributions (from €200/month under the new quota system, scaling with income), issue invoices with or without VAT depending on the activity, and file quarterly income tax and VAT returns.

Who Can Register as Autónomo?

Any person who is legally authorised to work in Spain can register as autónomo. This includes EU citizens, non-EU nationals with a work permit (including Self-Employment Visa holders and Digital Nomad Visa holders), and holders of other residence permits that include the right to work. We assess your immigration status before recommending this route.

Documents and Process

To register as autónomo you need: a valid NIE/TIE, a Spanish bank account, registration with the Tax Agency (Modelo 036 or 037), and registration with Social Security (Sistema RED). The process can be completed in 1–2 business days once all prerequisites are in place. We handle all filings on your behalf.

Social Security Contributions

Under the new 2023 contribution system, autónomos pay between €200 and €590/month depending on their net income. New autónomos in their first year benefit from a flat €80/month rate (the tarifa plana). We optimise your contribution base from the outset to minimise costs.

Autónomo vs. S.L.: Which Is Right for You?

Autónomo status is simpler and cheaper to maintain, but offers less liability protection and can be tax-inefficient above certain income levels (roughly €45,000/year net). At that point, incorporating an S.L. and paying yourself a salary often becomes more efficient. We provide a financial analysis for each client to determine the optimal structure.
