Self-Employment Visa in Spain: How Middle Eastern Entrepreneurs Can Live and Work in Spain
Everything you need to know about Spain's Self-Employment Visa (Visado por Cuenta Propia) for non-EU nationals.
Spain's Self-Employment Visa (Visado de Trabajo por Cuenta Propia) allows non-EU nationals to live in Spain and work as independent professionals or run their own business. For Middle Eastern entrepreneurs who want to relocate to Spain and work locally — rather than just remotely — this is often the most appropriate route. Parastoo Legal Group has guided entrepreneurs from the UAE, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and beyond through the full process.
Who Is the Self-Employment Visa For?
This visa is for non-EU nationals who wish to move to Spain and: operate as an independent professional (consultant, architect, engineer, designer, etc.), run a small business or service company in Spain, or combine self-employment with other activities. Unlike the Digital Nomad Visa, this visa permits working with Spanish clients.
Key Requirements
You must: demonstrate professional qualifications or relevant experience in your field, present a viable business plan showing that the activity is economically sustainable in Spain, prove sufficient financial means (typically €10,000–€20,000 in accessible savings), hold health insurance, and have a clean criminal record. The activity must be legal in Spain and, where applicable, require specific licensing.
The Business Plan
The business plan is the most important document in a Self-Employment Visa application. It must demonstrate: the nature of the activity, market demand in Spain, projected revenues and expenses, investment required, and job creation potential. Our team prepares compelling business plans that meet the Spanish immigration authority's requirements.
Process and Timeline
Applications are submitted at the Spanish Consulate in your country of residence. Processing typically takes 1–3 months. Once approved, you travel to Spain, register as autónomo, and apply for your TIE (foreigner identity card). Your initial permit is valid for 1 year and renewable for 2-year periods.
Combining with the Autónomo Regime
Self-Employment Visa holders register as autónomos in Spain, paying monthly Social Security contributions and filing quarterly tax returns. Our team manages the full alta de autónomo process and provides ongoing accounting and compliance support.
