From Residency to Spanish Citizenship: The Complete Roadmap

How Middle Eastern nationals can progress from a first residence permit to Spanish nationality.

Spain offers one of the most structured pathways to European citizenship available to non-EU nationals. For Middle Eastern clients who begin their journey with a Non-Lucrative Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, or Golden Visa, Spanish citizenship is an achievable long-term goal. The timeline and requirements depend on your nationality and residency history.

The Standard Path: 10 Years

Most non-EU nationals can apply for Spanish nationality after 10 years of legal, continuous residency in Spain. The key requirements: continuous residence (absences must be limited — generally no more than 10 months total in the 10-year period), good civic conduct, sufficient integration into Spanish society, and passing two official exams (DELE Spanish language test and CCSE civic knowledge test).

Shorter Paths for Some Nationalities

Nationals of certain countries have shorter residency requirements: 2 years for nationals of Latin American countries, Portugal, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, and Andorra; 1 year for spouses of Spanish nationals (if married for 1 year). There is no shortened path for GCC or Iranian nationals under current law.

Milestones Along the Way

Year 1: Initial residence permit. Year 2–3: First renewal. Year 5: Long-term EU residency (permanent residency). Year 10: Spanish nationality application. Each renewal requires demonstrating continued compliance with residence requirements. We manage every renewal for our clients as part of our ongoing service.

The Citizenship Application

The Spanish nationality application is submitted at the Civil Registry. Required documents include: a clean Spanish criminal record, DELE language certificate (at least B1 level), CCSE civic test certificate, passport, and evidence of continuous residence. Processing times are currently 12–24 months. We manage the full application.

The Value of Spanish Nationality

Spanish nationality grants EU citizenship — freedom of movement, work, and residency across 27 EU member states, plus the right to live and work in the UK (via the EU Settlement Scheme grandfather rights), Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. It also provides access to Spain's consular network worldwide and the right to hold a Spanish passport, one of the world's strongest.
