Spanish Citizenship for Iranian Nationals: The Path to EU Passport

How Iranian nationals can obtain Spanish nationality — and what it means in terms of global mobility.

For Iranian nationals, a Spanish passport represents transformational access: visa-free travel to 190+ countries, full EU freedom of movement, and the security of a second citizenship in a stable European democracy. Parastoo Legal Group has guided many Iranian clients through the decade-long journey from first Spanish residency permit to Spanish nationality.

The 10-Year Pathway for Iranian Nationals

Iran does not have a shorter residency pathway to Spanish citizenship (unlike nationals of Latin American countries who qualify after 2 years). Iranian nationals must complete 10 years of continuous, legal residency in Spain before applying for nationality. During this period, absences are permitted but must not exceed approximately 10 months in total.

Starting the Clock: First Residency

The most important step is obtaining your first Spanish residency permit as quickly as possible. For Iranian nationals with savings, the Non-Lucrative Visa is typically the fastest route. For entrepreneurs, the Self-Employment or Start-Up Visa. For investors, the Golden Visa. We assess each client's situation and advise on the optimal starting route.

The DELE Language Test

To apply for Spanish nationality, Iranian nationals must pass the DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) exam at at least B1 level. This is a formal Spanish language proficiency test. We advise clients to begin language study as early as possible in their residency period.

The CCSE Civic Knowledge Test

In addition to the DELE, applicants must pass the CCSE (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España) test — a civic knowledge examination covering Spanish history, culture, and constitutional values. The test is available in Persian (Farsi) as well as Spanish and other languages.

Dual Nationality Considerations

Iran does not officially recognise dual nationality for its citizens. In practice, many Iranian-Spanish citizens hold both passports. We advise clients on the legal and practical aspects of dual nationality, including the implications for travel to Iran and for Iranian property ownership.
